Over-ear, on-ear, and true wireless (earbuds) each suit different use cases. Over-ear headphones seal around your ear, giving the best passive isolation and the most room for large drivers — ideal for home, travel, and serious listening. On-ear headphones rest on the ear rather than around it; lighter, but less isolating. True wireless earbuds are the most portable and best for sport, but battery life per charge is shorter and ANC quality generally trails the best over-ears.
For most buyers who want serious noise cancellation and audio quality, over-ear is the answer. If you mainly commute or exercise, true wireless earbuds may serve you better.
02Active Noise Cancellation explained
ANC works by sampling ambient sound via external microphones and playing an inverse waveform into your ear — cancelling the noise before it reaches you. The quality of this process depends on the processor speed, the number of microphones, and the algorithms involved.
We measure ANC in decibels of attenuation. In our lab tests, premium headphones like the Sony WH-1000XM6 achieve around −31dB, while entry-level options often land at −18 to −22dB. That gap is significant in real-world use.
ANC works best against constant, low-frequency sounds like aircraft engines and HVAC. It's less effective against sudden sharp sounds or high-frequency voices. Passive isolation from a good ear cup seal handles those better.
03Bluetooth codecs: what actually matters
Your audio is compressed to fit Bluetooth's bandwidth. The codec determines how much quality survives.
SBC is the universal fallback — adequate but noticeably compressed. AAC is significantly better and Apple's default for iPhone users. AptX and aptX HD (Qualcomm, Android/PC) offer CD-quality to 24-bit. LDAC (Sony) is the current gold standard at up to 990kbps — enabling genuine hi-res audio over Bluetooth, but only on Android and PC.
If you use an iPhone, your codec ceiling is AAC regardless of what the headphone supports. Android users who care about audio quality should prioritise headphones with LDAC support.
04Battery life: what manufacturers don't tell you
Battery ratings are measured at low volume (typically 50–60%) with ANC off. Real-world use at normal listening volumes with ANC on is typically 20–30% less than the rated figure.
For frequent flyers, aim for 25+ hours with ANC on — a London–Sydney flight is around 21 hours. For daily office use, 20 hours is ample for a full working week between charges. Quick charge is genuinely useful — Sony's 10-minute charge giving 5 hours is a real convenience in practice.
Check the charging port. USB-C is standard as of 2026. Avoid headphones still using Lightning unless you're buying for a specific reason.
05Comfort: the most underrated factor
Clamping force, ear cup depth, cushion material, headband padding, and weight all determine comfort over long sessions. The lightest over-ear headphone on the market — the Bose QC45 at 238g — is noticeably more comfortable at hour 6 than a 385g headphone regardless of cushion quality.
Protein leather cushions trap heat. Mesh or fabric cushions run cooler but collect moisture differently. Memory foam distributes pressure better than standard foam. If you wear headphones for 6+ hours daily, these details matter more than a slightly higher ANC score.
06Which should you buy?
For most people: the Sony WH-1000XM6 ($279) offers the best combination of ANC, sound, battery, and features. It's our top pick and has been for two consecutive generations.
Apple users who want seamless ecosystem integration: AirPods Max ($549) — but only if you're deep in Apple's ecosystem. The premium is not worth it otherwise.
All-day comfort above all else: Bose QC45 ($249) — the lightest option that still delivers genuinely good ANC.
Budget under $80: Anker Soundcore Q45 ($60) — not premium, but genuinely impressive for the price with surprisingly decent ANC and 50-hour battery life.
